ABOUT PROPEL STUDIO

Our Story

At Propel Studio Architecture, we believe design has the power to transform communities, inspire creativity, and foster sustainability. Since our founding in 2013, we have been dedicated to creating innovative, thoughtful designs that serve people and the environment alike. From government and residential to commercial and institutional projects, we have shaped spaces across the Pacific Northwest and beyond, always with a focus on community and sustainability. Our firm was born from the shared vision of Tuan Vu and Nick Mira, who first met in 2009 while working on projects together at the same architectural firm.

Tuan, born and raised in Vietnam, grew up in a household that valued education and creativity. As the son of an English professor, Tuan was exposed to Oregon from a young age through interactions with visiting University of Oregon professors in the 1990s. This connection sparked his passion for architecture, which ultimately led him to pursue a degree at the University of Oregon. After graduating, Tuan chose Portland for its progressive values and commitment to design excellence.

Nick, raised in Pennsylvania, found his passion for architecture in Boston’s dynamic design scene. In 2009, Nick relocated to Portland, seeking a fresh start in a city known for its progressive values and deep commitment to sustainable design. Portland’s proximity to nature, including the mountains and coast, combined with its forward-thinking architectural community, made it the perfect fit for Nick’s professional and personal aspirations. His love for snowboarding, hiking, and outdoor activities only deepened his connection to the Pacific Northwest, where the natural environment continues to inspire his work.

United by their passion for sustainable design and creative problem-solving, Tuan and Nick realized they both aspired to create architecture utilizing unique perspectives—Tuan’s immigrant background and Nick’s out-of-state lens. Together, they founded Propel Studio with a clear mission: to create architecture that celebrates cultural diversity, fosters inclusivity, and makes a positive impact on the environment and society. They recognized that architecture is not just about buildings, but about connecting with clients, stakeholders, and communities on a deeper level. Propel Studio allows them to engage directly with the people they serve, ensuring every project is crafted with care and intention.

At Propel Studio Architecture, we bring fresh perspectives to every project, drawing from our diverse backgrounds, creativity, and commitment to personal growth. Our mission is to transform the built environment through thoughtful, sustainable design that uplifts communities and drives social and environmental progress. With expertise in architectural and interior design, planning, and project management, we ensure each project meets our clients' unique needs while exceeding environmental standards. Committed to sustainability and community engagement, we prioritize our clients’ vision, delivering innovative solutions that inspire and positively impact society.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: At Propel Studio Architecture, we place diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) at the core of our culture and practice. We recognize diversity as a powerful strength, fostering an environment where every voice is valued and empowered to contribute unique talents. Our commitment to equity ensures that all individuals—whether team members, clients, or partners—are treated with respect and given equal opportunities. Inclusion is not only a moral imperative but a strategic advantage that enhances our work and strengthens our mission. We continuously evolve our practices to ensure that DEI principles are embedded in every aspect of our operations and projects.

Project Outreach and Engagement: We believe that successful projects are built through collaboration and active engagement. From concept to completion, we prioritize transparent communication and proactive outreach with clients, stakeholders, and communities. By listening and incorporating their feedback, we create designs that reflect the needs and aspirations of the people we serve. Our commitment to open dialogue throughout the project lifecycle fosters trust, ensuring that our solutions have a positive and lasting impact.

Design Equity: Guided by principles of Critical Race Theory, we strive for equity in every design. We are committed to addressing the systemic impacts of racism and ensuring our work reflects fair, inclusive, and just outcomes. By actively reflecting on biases and co-designing with users as equal partners, we amplify the experiences and values of the communities we serve. For us, design equity is not just an aspiration—it’s essential to achieving positive social change, justice, and dignity for all.
